How to Choose the Right POP Contractor

10 questions that separate real professionals from expensive mistakes.

A bad ceiling contractor costs more than money — it means cracks, sagging and redoing everything within a year. These 10 questions (asked by our own clients before hiring us) reveal quickly who is professional and who is not.

The 10 Questions

1. How many years of experience do you have? Look for 5–10 years minimum. Newer contractors can be fine for simple work, but designer or large projects need experienced hands.

2. Can you show previous work? Any reputable contractor has photos and site references. Ask specifically for projects similar to yours.

3. Can I speak to past clients? Two or three references tells you more than any sales pitch.

4. Which materials and brands will you use? Expect branded names — Saint-Gobain, Gyproc, USG Boral, Trimurti. "Local material" without specifics is a warning sign.

5. What is the framework spacing? Correct answer: channels around 2 feet apart. 4 feet is a cost-cutting shortcut that causes sagging within months.

6. Do you give a written itemized quote? Material, labour, lighting — line by line. A single lump-sum number on a piece of paper is not professional.

7. What warranty do you provide? Reputable contractors stand behind work — we provide a 10-year workmanship warranty (T&C apply).

8. What is the payment schedule? Healthy answer: staged payments, never more than 50% advance. Demanding full payment upfront is the #1 red flag.

9. How long will the project take? Get the schedule in writing, with a clear start date and completion estimate.

10. Who handles cleanup and final check? Professionals leave the site clean and do a walkthrough with you before final payment.

Quick Red-Flag Summary

  • ❌ No written quote or warranty
  • ❌ More than 50% advance demanded
  • ❌ Vague material answers ("don't worry, we'll use good stuff")
  • ❌ No site visit before quoting
